Meet: DigitalCurls

1.    Why did you choose to go natural?* I decided to go natural, because I
was tired of fighting against my God given texture. Around the time I
decided to go natural, my hair had been shedding and literally falling out
in clumps. I was following a couple of You Tuber’s that were transitioning
and got up the courage to start transitioning myself.

2.   *Were you a long term or short-term transitioner, and why?

I was a short-term transitioner. I had attempted to grow my relaxer out, but after 4 months of trying, the two textures had taken its toll.

3.  *When did you BC?* What was your initial reaction to your natural hair? I BC’d on July 31, 2009. My first reaction to my natural hair was a state of shock. I couldn’t believe I had gone through with it. I was relieved that I was completely natural and that I didn’t have to worry about the two
textures.

4.   *How did family and friends react to the new you? What was your response to them?* My husband loved it! He had encouraged me through the
whole process. My friends were also supportive. I did have one friend asked
me “If I was okay and what had gotten into me” Insinuating that I had gotten
it done off of a nervous breakdown. I was confident in my decision to go
natural and didn’t feel the need to explain to them why I did. It was my
decision.

5.   *What was your transition routine (products included)?* When I was transitioning; I would use all the products that I used on my relaxed hair. I used KeraCare products mostly. I washed with KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo and conditioned with the Humecto Creme Conditioner weekly. I’d pony
tail it until the next wash week. Sad, but true, I thought the less
manipulation the better.

6.   *What was your staple hairstyle during the transition? Now? *I wore my hair pulled back in a ponytail 98 % of the time. A big NO NO!

7.   *Why did you choose to go natural?* I was simply tired of working against my texture. I was over the limitations that my relaxed hair had put on me. Be it working out, swimming, the rain, and my Saturdays spent in a salon. I just wanted healthy, scab free (chemical burns) hair!

8.   *What advice would you give to someone thinking about going natural?* Do your research. There is so much information on natural hair care, styling, and products. Surround yourself with people who will support you, because not everyone will. Let go of the how you used to look and try to understand that it will take time to fall in love with the new you. I think once you let go the confidence kicks in. Remember God doesn’t make mistakes! He makes us special and unique in His likeness, so embrace it!
