Mini-Twists

7 months natural

7 months natural

7 months natural
The pictures that you see above are from Mini-Twists that were done at 7mths natural.  I was just playing around with my hair and found a cute style. I didnt like them at all. I  watched countless videos of ladies on YT who always seemed to have the perfect set of Mini-Twists. Their hair never seemed to shrink to the length  my hair shrunk to. I only wore these 2 days. :(
Fast forward to last week Thursday August 26 and now I am 15 months natural. I tried them again with much better results. I twisted my hair (dry) only misting H2O to make my hair more manageable. I sealed with castor oil and began to twist. The entire process took me about 1hr 45min. I challenged myself to wear them for the weekend and I ended up wearing them until Tuesday August 30. I guess the biggest thing for me was that they were longer and so soft. I love the castor oil. Here are some pictures:

I am not sure if you can tell that I like these so much better! I had such a great twist-out once they were removed! I am thinking about putting them in weekly and wearing my fro or twist out just a few days during the week instead of every day! It sure was better this time than the last time!

HoneyChile Get Healthy 30-Day Challenge

I have decided to attack this challenge head on! I have noticed that I have put on a few extra pounds over the summer. And honestly, I dont feel like myself. I feel very unhealthy. Bloated, full, and Y-U-C-K-Y! So, knowing that I needed to do something to jump start this process, I have signed on to do this 30 day challenge. I believe it is sponsored by The Main Source (site link here)

She states on her site: " The ultimate goal is become an overall healthier person by adopting a healthy lifestyle. In doing so you will also lose those unwanted pounds that you’ve been trying to lose for years."
Here are the rules:
  • 8 glasses of water per day
  • Exercise at least 3 times per week for 30 minutes
  • Give up carbonated beverages (besides water you may have  100% juice in moderation)
  • Eat fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Swap out “white” foods with “brown” foods (brown rice, whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, etc.)
  • Limit fried foods
TheMainSource began this challenge on August 1st and is now in her 2nd round of the challenge. She states in her site that she lost 8lbs during the first month. I hope that I am that lucky. I will post my weight-loss goals in a few days. These rules seem easy enough for me. What about you? I will begin today and check back in 2 weeks to let you know my progress. I will also journal to help document this journey. I hope you will join me in taking the necessary steps to become a healthier YOU!!

Purpose

"THE UNIVERSE IS IN PERFECT ORDER.
THE STARS. THE MOON.
AND THE SUN ARE ALL OPERATING IN PERFECT, DIVINE ORDER.
A RHYTHM AND A PURPOSE TO THEIR PATHWAYS.
I AM APART OF THE UNIVERSE:
THEREFORE, I KNOW THAT THERE IS AN ORDER. A RHYTHM.
AND A PURPOSE TO MY LIFE."

~Natural Hair~ Length Check- August 2011

So today I washed my hair. If you follow this blog, you know that I normally wash on Fridays or Mondays but I NEEDED this wash today. My scalp was dirty! :) I got up a little bit earlier than I had been getting up in the past few days and I watched a few YT vids. I saw a video by KinkyKurlyKham (Click Here) and she discussed how one goes about measuring their hair for length checks. I have never filmed or aired my length stats because I used body markers to indicate growth. Body markers, like my nose and chin to indicate growth.  But, she made some good points that made me realize that using this method may not be as accurate as I thought.

So, I washed my hair and took out a tape measure and here are my results:

Front- 5 inches
Left side- 5 inches
Right side- 5 inches
Back (middle)- 4 1/2 inches

Seems like my hair is pretty even. I have been trimming my own hair and since I have been natural, I have trimmed my hair 2x's and I think I may have cut off 1 1/2 inches. Yep, I got scissor happy! Didn't want no scraggly ends! Anywhoo, those are my stats for the month of August. Ill check back in October with my new stats!

Fro Fashion Week ~Atlanta~

I can't wait to go to this event!!

SEPTEMBER 17-25, 2011
Atlanta, GA
Hotel Melia-Downtown
For More Info Click Here

Meet: DigitalCurls

1.    Why did you choose to go natural?* I decided to go natural, because I
was tired of fighting against my God given texture. Around the time I
decided to go natural, my hair had been shedding and literally falling out
in clumps. I was following a couple of You Tuber’s that were transitioning
and got up the courage to start transitioning myself.

2.   *Were you a long term or short-term transitioner, and why?

I was a short-term transitioner. I had attempted to grow my relaxer out, but after 4 months of trying, the two textures had taken its toll.

3.  *When did you BC?* What was your initial reaction to your natural hair? I BC’d on July 31, 2009. My first reaction to my natural hair was a state of shock. I couldn’t believe I had gone through with it. I was relieved that I was completely natural and that I didn’t have to worry about the two
textures.

4.   *How did family and friends react to the new you? What was your response to them?* My husband loved it! He had encouraged me through the
whole process. My friends were also supportive. I did have one friend asked
me “If I was okay and what had gotten into me” Insinuating that I had gotten
it done off of a nervous breakdown. I was confident in my decision to go
natural and didn’t feel the need to explain to them why I did. It was my
decision.

5.   *What was your transition routine (products included)?* When I was transitioning; I would use all the products that I used on my relaxed hair. I used KeraCare products mostly. I washed with KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo and conditioned with the Humecto Creme Conditioner weekly. I’d pony
tail it until the next wash week. Sad, but true, I thought the less
manipulation the better.

6.   *What was your staple hairstyle during the transition? Now? *I wore my hair pulled back in a ponytail 98 % of the time. A big NO NO!

7.   *Why did you choose to go natural?* I was simply tired of working against my texture. I was over the limitations that my relaxed hair had put on me. Be it working out, swimming, the rain, and my Saturdays spent in a salon. I just wanted healthy, scab free (chemical burns) hair!

8.   *What advice would you give to someone thinking about going natural?* Do your research. There is so much information on natural hair care, styling, and products. Surround yourself with people who will support you, because not everyone will. Let go of the how you used to look and try to understand that it will take time to fall in love with the new you. I think once you let go the confidence kicks in. Remember God doesn’t make mistakes! He makes us special and unique in His likeness, so embrace it!

You DONT NEED a Boyfriend!!

Inner Beauty Makeover

I attended a natural hair meet-up in Birmingham and it dawned on me how far I have come in this natural hair journey. If you know my hair story, I wanted to change my overall look because of a bad break-up. Yeah, I wanted to change who I was because of a M-A-N! Who does that?! I was listening to ladies speak at the event and I was totally unaware that so many ladies had dealt with having poor self-image issues. Beauty and trying to figure out how we "should" look has plagued our community since slavery. Light-skinned vs. dark skinned and now natural hair vs relaxed hair. Why are we so concerned with our outer beauty, when so many of us need an inner beauty make-over?

Sure, I have gotten many compliments on how cute my hair is and how it "fits" me (whatever that means) but do you notice a change that radiates from within me? Natural, in my own definition, is pure. No additives, no extra stuff. Natural is original. Had I known who I was "naturally" maybe my break-up wouldn't have made me want to change myself for a guy. Maybe if you know who you are "naturally" it won't bother you so bad either. So, it is my hope that women, whether natural or relaxed, explore the inner "natural" sides of themselves, and finally embrace all you are. I truly believe that once we silence the "lyes/lies" that have been told about us and said against us, we can truly put to rest our poor self-image issues and re-claim our Inner Beauty!
